What are some common issues that can be treated through counseling?

Counseling is often highly effective for various sorts of common psychological problems. For instance, if you suffer from depression, anxiety, alcoholism or excessive anger problems, then talking with a licensed, experienced counselor can make an enormous difference in your quality of life. Plus, you will learn coping strategies to assist you process your emotions and feel more content even once you are not during a counseling session.

How important is confidentiality in the field of counseling?

All medical and health professionals follow specific guidelines around confidentiality, and for counselors, confidentiality is a key aspect of the ACA Code of Ethics. Additionally, counselors are bound by equivalent laws that medical doctors are, specifically the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, or HIPAA, which is mandated by federal law. This law dictates that private medical records, including psychological state records and people obtained through counseling or therapy, are protected and shall remain confidential. There are a couple of exceptions to this, for instance, if you're seeing a counselor and therefore the counselor believes you pose a threat to yourself or others or that a threat is posed to a minor, elderly person, or person with disabilities, then these circumstances are going to be reported to the acceptable authorities. If our client shows signs of threatened suicide, a counselor may prefer to contact a beloved one rather than or in addition to the authorities.
